When Traditional Owner knowledge is incorporated into environmental science studies, powerful things happen. In late November 2025, the Quandamooka Land and Sea Rangers joined fire ecologists and researchers on Minjerribah for two days of learning, mapping, and protecting the vulnerable south-eastern Glossy Black-Cockatoo. By blending cultural knowledge and scientific expertise, the workshop revealed how fire shapes critical habitat and how collaboration in on-ground management as well as research can secure the future of threatened species across South East Queensland.

When neighbours work together, fire becomes an appropriate management tool. Local landholders in Queensland's Kerry district are taking control of their landscape's future, learning to use strategic burns to protect assets and build resilience. A recent Fire Management Planning Workshop brought the community together with expert support, proving that coordinated action is the key to safer, healthier landscapes.

The Restore & Reconnect Program has revised the SEQ Areas of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS) mapping to guide habitat restoration for South East Queensland's endangered koalas to produce the latest 2025 SEQ ARKS mapping tool. This aligns with one of the program’s key objectives to identify and prioritise sites across South-East Queensland to deliver strategic restoration and assisted regeneration of koala habitat in koala priority areas and koala habitat restoration areas.

The updated 2025 SEQ ARKS incorporates local stakeholder datasets to help identify where restoration efforts will contribute to the greatest positive impacts for koala conservation across the SEQ region.
